A show that spirals out of control

Heartbreakers  is a performance created and performed by all fourth-year Music Theatre students in the class of 2012, directed by Aike Dirkzwager. Based on a composition by Jacob ter Veldhuis and using text samples from the Jerry Springer show, they created a musical theatre performance where the audience finds itself at a talkshow recording that spirals completely out of control. Emotions run high and chaos reigns as guests, hostess and director lose it entirely. The performance is based on a composition by Jacob ter Veldhuis that intertwines samples from the Jerry Springer show with strong jazz and rock music.

For this performance, Aike worked together with a writer, a composer, and a 7-person band in the role of a studio band. The students sung, acted, and voiced the Jerry Springer show samples. In short, they contributed musically and theatrically in every possible way and projected throughout in live video footage. Everyone was continually present on stage in a turbulent, comical, and at times emotional performance.
